Right-back McCarthy made his return to Adams Park for the fourth time in August 2020, having previously been awarded Player of the Year accolade twice in his spells with Wycombe.

McCarthy first joined Wycombe on loan from Southampton in 2015/16, making 35 appearances and scoring twice, before a new loan deal took him to Walsall the subsequent season. In the 2017 summer window, McCarthy joined Barnsley on a three-year contract, spending time on loan with Millwall and Wycombe again.

In August 2020, McCarthy joined the Chairboys permanently, signing a three-year contract. McCarthy transitioned into a wing-back role as the 2020/21 Championship season progressed, scoring two goals in the process, and played regularly for the Blues throughout the 2021/22 campaign and beyond, becoming one of the longest-serving members of the club.
